Anwar backs Dr M's rationale for keeping Kiandee as PAC chairman

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s rationale for maintaining Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee as the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) should be considered.

Pakatan Harapan’s manifesto for the 14th General Election states that the post of PAC chairman should be held by an opposition federal lawmaker.

“I’m still bound to it (PH’s manifesto), but let’s listen to the prime minister’s explanation as well.

“I think we can discuss it again in detail and refer to the prime minister,” he said in Parliament today.

Anwar is leading the parliamentary caucus on reform and governance.

Kiandee who left Umno last year to become an independent lawmaker was accepted as a member of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia last week.

On Saturday, Dr Mahathir said Kiandee would not need to step down because the PH manifesto was only a “policy and not institutionalised or part of the constitution”.

This move to retain Kiandee as the PAC chairman was opposed by PH leaders Hannah Yeoh and Nurul Izzah Anwar.
