Rantau by-election: Indie candidate Mohd Nor to start campaigning Friday

RANTAU: Mohd Nor Yassin, who was expelled from Amanah for contesting as an independent candidate in the Rantau by-election, will only start campaigning on Friday, the fifth day of the campaigning period.

The former lecturer said he has only been canvassing support from his family and close friends in Kampung Sega, here, since nomination day last Saturday.

"I will only start meeting the people on Friday to get their votes. I will invite the media to give me some coverage," he said when contacted, here, today.

"I apologise for the delay because I had to sort out some issues. But I'm still contesting as an independent and not under the Amanah ticket," he added.

On Saturday, Amanah vice-president Datuk Husam Musa said the party had expelled Mohd Nor, 67, for deciding to contest in Rantau without the party's permission.

Mohd Nor, who became a member of Amanah on March 10, is a former PAS leader who contested and lost the race for the Gemencheh state seat in the 14th General Election.

The Rantau by-election is a four-cornered fight between Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan from Barisan Nasional, Dr S. Streram from Pakatan Harapan, and two independent candidates R. Malarvizhi and Mohd Nor.

Polling day for the by-election has been set for April 13, with early voting to be held four days earlier.

The by-election was called after the Federal Court dismissed an appeal filed by Mohamad to set aside an Election Court decision to declare his victory in last year's general election null and void.

Mohamad had won the seat uncontested in May 2018 after Dr Streram was unable to submit his nomination papers after being denied entry into the nomination centre for not having a pass issued by the Election Commission.

The state constituency has 20,926 registered voters, including 118 early voters and four absentee voters.
