Shafie to announce Sandakan by-election candidate soon

KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) has discussed with DAP on a potential candidate to be fielded for the Sandakan parliamentary seat by-election next month.

Chief Minister and Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said he would reveal the candidate to the media at a more appropriate time.

“I’ve discussed with (Lim Guan Eng) yesterday and I will make the announcement when the time comes,” he told reporters at a press conference, here, today.

When pressed if a candidate has been decided on, Shafie responded with a “yes”.

“We have discussed, and I don’t want to hide things. Insya-Allah (God willing), we will announce and we will have a meeting to allow our preparation process to be carried out successfully,” he added.

The Sandakan parliamentary seat was left vacant after its incumbent Datuk Stephen Wong, who was state Health and People’s Wellbeing Minister and state DAP chairman, died from a heart attack on March 28.

In the 14th general election, Wong defended his parliamentary seat after obtaining 19,094 votes, defeating Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datuk Lim Ming Hoo, who received 8,996 votes.

The Election Commission (EC) had announced the Sandakan by-election to be held on May 11, with its nomination date set on April 27 and early polling fixed on May 7.
