Rantau by-election: 14 polling stations open at 8am

REMBAU: A total of 14 polling stations involving 53 streams in the Rantau state seat by-election opened at 8am to enable 20,793 voters to exercise their right.

The polling centres using 11 schools and three community halls will close at 5.30pm today.

The Election Commission (EC) is targeting 70 per cent voter turnout in the by-election and the results are expected to be announced by about 10pm.

The tallying of votes will be done at SJKC Bandar Sri Sendayan here, as soon as the balloting process ends at 5.30pm.

The Rantau by-election sees a four-cornered fight between Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan from Barisan Nasional, Dr S. Streram from Pakatan Harapan, and two independent candidates – R. Malarvizhi and Mohd Nor Yassin.

The by-election was called after the Federal Court dismissed an appeal filed by Mohamad to set aside an Election Court decision to declare his victory in the 14th general election (GE14) null and void.

Mohamad had won the seat uncontested in May 2018 after Dr Streram was unable to submit his nomination papers after being denied entry into the nomination centre for not having a pass issued by the EC.
