Vivian Wong visits father's grave on first morning as new MP

SANDAKAN: Vivian Wong Shir Yee spent her first morning as newly-elected Sandakan MP by visiting the grave of her late father Datuk Stephen Wong at the Sandakan Christian Cemetery here, today.

Vivian, 30, was accompanied by her mother Datin Florence Chong Mee Fook, other family members, as well as Sandakan DAP members.

Lowering their heads, Vivian and her entourage paid tribute to her father for his services to the people when he was Sandakan MP for two terms.

Vivian appeared to struggle to hold back tears as she placed flowers on her father’s grave.

Vivian, the youngest of four siblings, had attributed her victory in the Sandakan parliamentary by-election on Saturday to her late father who guided her in the political arena.

The Sandakan parliamentary seat was left vacant following Stephen Wong’s death from a heart attack on March 28.

Vivian retained her father’s seat with an even bigger majority of 11,521 votes, compared with Stephen’s 10,098 votes in the 14th general election.

She defeated PBS’s Datuk Linda Tsen Thau Lin and three independent candidates – Hamzah Abdullah, Chia Siew Yung and Sulaiman Abdul Samat. -- Bernama
