PKR to discuss sexual harassment report against Sg Siput MP at bureau meeting

KUALA LUMPUR: The sexual harassment report against PKR’s Sungai Siput member of Parliament S. Kesavan will be discussed at the party’s political bureau meeting tomorrow.

PKR vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin said the next course of action would be decided after the meeting.

“This matter will be brought up in the political bureau meeting tomorrow, where we will make a decision on the next action to take,” she told reporters at the media launch of the 21st Soroptimist International Convention Kuala Lumpur.

A woman, claiming to be his former aide, had accused Kesavan of sexual harassment.

The first-term MP had denied the accusation and claimed that the woman wanted to interfere with his relationship with his wife and family by deceiving him of her intentions.

On Friday, the Joint Action Group for Gender Equality (JAG) urged PKR to take the sexual harassment accusation seriously, and to immediately launch internal investigations.

In a statement, JAG said PKR should appoint an independent and gender-diverse investigation panel that had expertise on sexual harassment.

It also said the party should review its policies and response to sexual harassment, adding that existing criminal laws do not adequately cover sexual harassment cases.
