Tanjung Piai by-election: PKR pledges full support for Karmaine

PENAMPANG: PKR will throw its full support behind Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu)'s Karmaine Sardini as the Pakatan Harapan candidate for the upcoming Tanjung Piai parliamentary by-election.

In congratulating the Tanjung Piai Bersatu chief, PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he has informed all the central party machineries to assist the campaign.

"We congratulate Karmaine on him being announced as the Bersatu and PH candidate.

“I've instructed all PKR machineries in Tanjung Piai and also Johor, under leadership of (Johor PKR chairman) Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh to give focus to the by-election.

"We have to intensify campaigning for our Tanjung Piai candidate. I will personally go there," he told reporters after attending Sabah PKR convention here, today.

Johor PH chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin made the candidate announcement at the launch of the PH by-election machinery in Pontian, today.

Muhyiddin, who is Bersatu president, said Karmaine, 66, was chosen as he met all of PH’s criteria.

The Tanjung Piai parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of MP Datuk Dr Md Farid Rafik last month.

The Election Commission has fixed Nov 2 for nomination day and Nov 16 for polling day.

Meanwhile on the transition of the prime minister post from Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Anwar said the matter would be decided by the PH presidential council.

"The question of transition timing could be discussed... To me, I don't think it is an urgent matter.

"I am of the opinion that we need to give our cooperation to the federal government and focus on boosting the nation's economy, which is more urgent," he said.
