Umno to probe Azmin's controversial meeting

KUALA LUMPUR: The Umno Disciplinary Committee is mulling an investigation into a controversial meeting involving PKR’s Datuk Seri Azmin Ali and a group of Umno party leaders.

Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said complaints had been lodged with the committee following the meeting at Azmin’s official residence in Putrajaya on Monday night.

He said he was worried that decisions made in the meeting would go against Umno’s code of conduct.

“Umno will leave the matter to the party’s Disciplinary Committee to conduct an investigation,” Zahid said outside the Kuala Lumpur Courts Complex here.

“I agreed that the committee should initiate a probe as this is what is required under the party’s procedures.”

He said based on party regulations, the views of Umno parliamentarians must be in line with that of the party.

Zahid lambasted the way the meeting was carried out as it could spark speculation and was against the party’s protocol.

“I heard the meeting discussed the federal government’s projects in the constituencies of those who attended the meeting.

“The way the meeting was held caused displeasure among the party grassroots and the public.

“It should have been held in Parliament because members of the same party should make en bloc decisions.”

Former Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, meanwhile, refuted claims that he had planned the meeting.

He said the allegations were concocted by Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Lokman Noor Adam.

“The allegations that I led a meeting between Azmin and opposition members of parliament last night (Monday) are not true,” he said.

“I was not the one who planned the meeting.”

He said he was prepared to face the party’s Disciplinary Committee if he was called up.

“I have nothing to hide.”

It was reported that Hishammuddin was among at least a dozen opposition Barisan Nasional members of parliament who attended the meeting.-- Reporting by Rahmat Khairulrijal, Hairulazim Mahmud, Nor Ain Mohamed Radhi, Teh Athira Yusof
