RoS rejects registration of Muda as political party

KUALA LUMPUR: The Registrar of Societies (RoS) has rejected an application from youth movement, Malaysia United Democratic Alliance (Muda) to be registered as a political party.

In a statement issued by Muda, it said the rejection by RoS was received in an email yesterday.

"In the email, the RoS stated the application by Muda was rejected but there were no reasons provided.

"The rejection came four months after Muda submitted its application to the RoS.

"Muda is disappointed with the rejection as we have given our full cooperation and complied with all conditions required for the registration," the statement read.

Muda also claimed the rejection was a move by the Perikatan Nasional government to prevent them from taking part in the upcoming General Election.

"We demand that the government of the day contest in the next General Election in a fair, just, clean manner and not use cunning and dirty tactics.

"The rejection of Muda came a day after the uncovering of the scandal involving Pasir Salak Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Tajuddin Rahman's family relating to the Dang Wangi LRT project," said the group led by former youth and sports minister, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

Muda said it will consider all remaining options available including legal action against the RoS.

On Dec 21, Muda had given the RoS seven days to approve the registration of their political party or said they will proceed with legal action against the government agency.

Syed Saddiq had said the application to register Muda was submitted to the RoS on Sept 17.

Muda has since appointed former Attorney-General Tan Sri Tommy Thomas and former Bar Council president Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan to represent them over its registration issue.

Facing a similar registration issue was former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad-led party, Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang), which application was also rejected without any explanation by the RoS.

Counsel Mior Nor Haidir Suhaimi who represented Pejuang said he received a letter from RoS on the matter yesterday (Wednesday).

On Dec 10, Pejuang secretary-general Datuk Amiruddin Hamzah filed a judicial review application to challenge the actions of the RoS, which was yet to approve the party's registration.
