Pas objects to holding GE15 amidst pandemic, floods

MARANG: Pas has voiced its objection to the idea of organising the 15th General Election (GE15) at a time when the country is still navigating the challenges brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the floods which are inundating several states.

Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said holding GE15 during a period when the country is grappling with the twin crises will aggravate the situation and subsequently compound the burden endured by the people.

"Wait until there is significant improvement in the situations related to the pandemic and the floods.

"It is inappropriate to demand that the government dissolve Parliament to make way for GE15 when the country is still battling to prevent Covid-19 from escalating," he told reporters after delivering the Friday kuliah virtually at the Rusila Mosque here today.

Abdul Hadi, who is also the Marang Member of Parliament, was asked to comment on a statement by Umno that the party plans to raise several motions, including pushing for GE15 before the end of the first quarter, at its annual general assembly on Jan 31.

On a related development, Abdul Hadi said Pas will continue to strengthen its cooperation among parties in the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government apart from supporting the leadership of Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

"We (together with other political allies) built PN and will continue with efforts to strengthen the political bloc and not engage in any action that will destroy the political cooperation," he said.
