Ex-Sarawak PKR leader now deputy president of new party

KUCHING: Julau member of parliament (MP) Larry Sng today confirmed he is now the deputy president of Parti Bangsa Malaysia, a new political party which will be launched soon.

Sng said the party will not contest in the upcoming Sarawak state election, but would support the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition.

"No, we will not contest in the state election, we will support GPS," he told New Straits Times.

Sng, who is also the former Sarawak PKR chairman said, the new political party will be launched in the coming weeks and will reveal more details about the party's goals and struggles as well as its mission and vision.

"We are in the process of planning it (launch) and have yet to decide the date and venue. I can answer more of (your) questions during the launch," he said.

It was also recently reported that Tebrau MP Steven Choong confirmed that he was working with Sng and they were in the process of forming a new political party.

Choong said the new party will be for all races, and welcomes independent lawmakers to join them.

The door is also open to those who have quit PKR but have not joined any other political party.

The duo has remained independent MPs since they quit PKR in February and declared support for then prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

In 2018, Sng polled 10,105 votes to win the Julau seat, defeating four-term incumbent Joseph Salang Gandum of Sarawak People's Party, who secured 8,174 votes.

He was invited to join PKR and subsequently took over as the state party chairman after Selangau MP Baru Bian quit the party during the country's political crisis last year.
