GE15: Mahathir in for a 5-cornered battle in Langkawi

LANGKAWI: Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will face a five-cornered battle in the Langkawi parliamentary seat this Nov 19.

The Gerakan Tanah Air chairman seeks to defend his seat as a Parti Pejuang Tanah Air candidate.

He will go up against Datuk Armishah Sirahlj (Barisan Nasional), Datuk Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah (Perikatan Nasional), Zabidi Yahya (Pakatan Harapan) and Datuk Paduka Abdul Kadir Sainudin (Independent).

Dr Mahathir, 97, is the oldest candidate in the 15th General Election.

He won the seat with a 8,893-vote majority in the 14th General Election, when he was Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chairman, under PKR.

Returning officer Datuk Abdul Gafar Yahya officially announced the contenders for the seat at 10.30am today.

Armishah was the first to arrive at the nomination centre at 9.01am to submit his nomination form, followed by Dr Mahathir, Kadir, Suhaimi and Zabidi.

There are 66,777 eligible voters in Langkawi.

In the 14th General Election, Dr Mahathir obtained 18,954 votes, defeating Datuk Nawawi Ahmad of BN and Zubir Ahmad of Pas.
