More Umno leaders show support for Zahid

KUALA LUMPUR: Some 100 Wanita Umno leaders gathered at the party's headquarters in Menara Dato' Onn today to show support for president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Wanita Umno chief Datuk Dr Noraini Ahmad said the party and Barisan Nasional have to stop finding a scapegoat to blame for their poor performance in the 15th General Election.

"We should take this as a lesson and concentrate on starting afresh to restore the confidence and support of the people in the party and coalition," she said in a statement after a briefing.

She said all Umno members should place their trust and faith in the Bagan Datuk member of parliament to continue leading the party.

"The result of GE15 is a clear signal and we must take it in our stride and respect the election outcome. We need to accept and respect the mandate given (to other parties)," she was reported telling Free Malaysia Today.

Meanwhile, Batu Umno chief Yahya Mat Ghani who had earlier called on Zahid to step down has now said that he accepts the party's decision to form a unity government with Pakatan Harapan.

Yahya said as president, Zahid deserved to determine Umno's direction when it comes to forming a multi-coalition government.

"The leadership (of Umno) is more knowledgeable in this matter, and of course, as a leader, he thinks about the party's survival. I think the president's move to join the unity government was a smart one to ensure Umno can rise again," he was quoted saying to FMT today.
