Syed Saddiq shows Parliament why he's the 'king of social media' among politicians

KUALA LUMPUR: Most members of parliament are usually content with just standing up and displaying their oratory skills in the Dewan Rakyat without the need for any additional devices.

Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, however, is not like most MPs.

The Muar representative today demonstrated why he has the most number of followers on social media among all politicians when he whipped out three phone cameras to record himself as he was debating the 2023 Budget policy speech.

The Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) president had set up three phone cameras on a single tripod to 'live stream' his speech.

This, however, would come as no surprise to the 30-year-old's fans, who follow his frequent social media updates religiously.

Syed Saddiq has, at last count, 1.9 million followers Instagram, 1.4 million followers on Twitter, 900,800 followers on TikTok and 843,000 followers on Facebook.

He even had a Bluetooth microphone pinned to the lapel of his jacket during his speech, presumably for better audio clarity during the live stream.

It is understood that he was live streaming his speech on Facebook and TikTok.

His speech today touched on several issues including Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Undi18 as well as a call for reform to reduce the level of 'toxicity' within Parliament.

On the TVET issue, Syed Saddiq had underscored three problems related to the programme, such as low pay, low registration rates at TVET institutions as well as how some subjects have been rendered irrelevant.
