Pas Muktamar: 'Don't just field candidates, back them up with machinery'

SHAH ALAM: The top leadership in Pas and Perikatan Nasional (PN) have been told to not just merely field candidates in the next general elections but also ensure that they are backed by election machinery.

During the debate on the Pas president's policy speech at the party's 69th Muktamar here today, a Pas delegate from Selangor, Salehan Mukhyi called on the party top leadership to start discussing to identify potential candidates now instead of waiting when the election is near.

Sallehen said this is to ensure the party could make ample preparation to face the polls.

"That is why I hope these discussions will not take place when the elections are near. It is necessary to establish a team starting now to determine the level of support that must be provided for each constituency.

"For example, parliamentary and state constituencies which have yet to be won by PN. There is a need to come out with a guideline on this.

"We do not want to simply nominate candidates when they do not have a solid backing. Hence, this needs to be carefully looked into from now on because there are areas where some parties do not have a support base. They just bring their resumes to meet the leadership and become candidates.

"This aspect needs to be reviewed. We hope these discussions won't only happen when elections are near. We can start working on it now," he said.

Sallehen added that PN top leadership can begin evaluating who is the most suitable candidate for each of the parliamentary and state constituencies in the country.

"Such an evaluation will serve as the basis for our decision-making (on the suitable candidates to be fielded at the respective parliamentary and state seats," he said.
