Malaysia is not a secular country: Tuan Ibrahim tells DAP MP

SHAH ALAM: Pas has shot down a DAP leader's suggestion for the party to accept Malaysia as a secular country if it wishes to woo non-Malays.

Pas deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said DAP's manifesto, which included "fighting for Malaysia as a secular country", was proof that Malaysia is not a secular country.

"The secular nation agenda and Malaysian Malaysia are in its manifesto that they (DAP) are fighting for.

"Islam is the official religion (of the country) and majority of Malaysians are Muslims," he told a Press conference on the sidelines of 69th Pas Muktamar here.

Tuan Ibrahim said Malaysians, regardless of race, have accepted the pillars of the nation, which included privileges of the Malays.

Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng in a statement had said that Pas must present itself as respecting the non-Muslim community, in line with the Islamic party's slogan "Islam For All".

He was commenting on Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang's presidential policy speech on Friday, where the latter called on party members to work towards gaining the support of non-Malays and non-Muslims.
