'Those who say Pas is against non-muslims are envious': Balasubramaniam

SHAH ALAM: Those who relentlessly attack Pas for being "extremist" are trying to paint a bad picture against the Islamist party among the non-Muslim people in the country, the party's non-Muslim wing leader said.

Pas Supporters Club chairman N. Balasubramaniam said those who portrayed Pas as a party against non-Muslims are envious of the Islamist party which has been increasingly gaining acceptance by all people in country.

In his winding-up speech at the Pas' 69th Muktamar (general assembly) here today, Balasubramaniam said the party was committed to its struggles to unite all the people in the country.

"The firm stand adopted by Pas in uniting the ummah and remaining together with non-Muslims who are not extreme, proves its critics wrong.

"Even though Pas policy is based on Islamic principles, the party still adheres to the concept of no compulsion in religion," he said.

To support his argument, Balasubramaniam cited the examples in Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Perlis - the states under the state administration of Pas-led Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.

"No places of worship (of other religions) were demolished, economic activities blocked, or non-Muslim communities made to suffer under the administration of Pas government in those states," he said.

Pas Supporters Club, he said, will continue to promote the national unity agenda under the slogan 'Islam for all' to generate greater support for the party from the people, especially the non-Muslims.
