Bersatu slams party MPs for 'betrayal'; Dewan Rakyat seat change a violation of political responsibility

KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) has slammed its members of parliament (MPs) for their betrayal after requesting to change seats in the Dewan Rakyat.

In a statement today, Federal Territories Bersatu Information chief, Mahathir Mohd Rais said the act is considered by many as irresponsible and a violation of the basic principles of political responsibility.

In contrast, Mahathir made a comparison to Pas MPs, who he described as having remained committed (to their party), even without receiving allocations for years.

"Their strength and dedication in the face of financial resource shortages have become a symbol of sincerity and political dedication," he said.

At the same time, he lauded Sembrong MP Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Tun Hussein's attitude who despite facing suspension by the Umno Supreme Council, remains loyal and committed to his party without changing seats.

Previously, media reported four MPs from Bersatu who pledged support for Anwar's government in the interest of their constituents.

They are Jeli MP Zahari Kechik, Gua Musang MP Azizi Abu Naim, Labuan MP Suhaili Abdul Rahman, and Kuala Kangsar MP Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid.

Following this, Bersatu suspended Suhaili for six years and Iskandar Dzulkarnain for four years.

Mahathir also stressed that this reflects an aspect of political loyalty, something which Bersatu's MPs are clearly lacking, he added.

"The criticism does not only come from political opponents but also from voters who perceive this change in stance as a disregard for the mandate given by the people.

"They view the actions of the Bersatu MPs as a betrayal of their promises to the voters and a failure to maintain loyalty to the coalition and the principles of the party that supported them.

"In making this decision, the MPs stated that their motivation was related to issues affecting the people, such as the rising cost of living and ongoing problems with water and electricity supply," he added.

"However, even as the MPs justify their actions by framing them as serving the interests of the people rather than driven by personal or political gain, their actions are still perceived by the public as a betrayal of the fundamental principles of loyalty and adherence to the party," he said, concluding the statement.
