Fauzi set to be new state opposition leader

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Pas commissioner Muhammad Fauzi Yusoff is set to be the next state opposition leader.

Speaking to the media at the sideline of the state legislative assembly sitting here today, he said Perikatan Nasional (PN) had decided for him to fill the post.

"PN has submitted the name to state legislative assembly speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang about a month ago, who will make an official announcement next Monday.

"The decision was made by the national leadership," he said.

Prior to this, it was reported that the PN leadership would determine the state opposition leader before the next state legislative assembly this month.

Several names were submitted to the PN leadership from among the state's 11 Pas and Bersatu elected representatives.

Among the names submitted were that of Fauzi and state Bersatu chief Zulkefli Bakar.

Asked on what changes the opposition hoped to introduce, Fauzi said their main focus was the issues faced by the people.

"We will be an objective opposition so as to help the people more effectively," he said.

Meanwhile, Penaga assemblyman Mohd Yusni Mat Piah, who was the sole opposition from Pas previously, said with 11 people in the opposition fold, they would implement effective and efficient check and balance to the state government.

"We will form a shadow exco to monitor each of the state excos.

"Of course it is more fun now and we will 'heat' up the august house," he added.

Pas has seven elected representatives in the state legislative assembly, while Bersatu has four.

PN secured 11 of the 40 state seats contested in the state elections in August.

PN managed to retain the Penaga state seat and wrestled the Permatang Berangan, Permatang Pasir, Penanti, Seberang Jaya, Sungai Dua, Telok Ayer Tawar, Pinang Tunggal, Sungai Bakap, Teluk Bahang and Pulau Betong state seats.
