Party chairman post should be reinstated if Muhyiddin doesn't contest, says Johor Bersatu

SHAH ALAM: Johor Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) today proposed for the party's chairman post to be constitutionally reinstated.

Its information chief, Muhammad Islahuddin Abas, said the post should be reinstated, should the party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin remain adamant with his decision not to defend the post in the party polls scheduled for next year.

"If Tan Sri is still determined not to defend the post, we suggest that the position of Bersatu chairman be established in an orderly manner; through the amendment to the party constitution," said Islahuddin, who is also a Mersing member of parliament, when met at the Bersatu annual general meeting today.

Previously, the chairman post was held by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Islahuddin said Johor Bersatu is of the view that Muhyiddin should remain as the party's president, to steer the party in the next election.

Earlier this morning, Muhyiddin in his president's policy speech announced that he will not defend his position in the upcoming party polls, scheduled for next year.

Muhyiddin, who is the Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman, said that the time for him to let go of the position has come.
