Don't look down on Kelantan, Terengganu, says PKR VP

PUTRAJAYA: PKR vice president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad warned delegates and party members to avoid being condescending to people in opposition-led states, particularly Kelantan and Terengganu.

In his winding-up speech for the PKR Annual National Congress, Nik Nazmi said despite the drubbing, there was still hope for the party to gain more influence in those states.

"We are all disappointed with the results of the recent state elections in the East Coast states, Kelantan and Terengganu. However, I urge that we maintain a long-term perspective.

"While we may not have won there yet, I hope there are no leaders in KL or Putrajaya who become discouraged or, worse, look down on the people of the East Coast, thinking, 'There's no use dealing with Kelantanese; whatever we do, we won't win.'," he said at Putrajaya International Convention Center (PICC) here today.

Commenting further, he urged PKR members to emulate Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's approach to engaging with people on the West Coast.

Apart from that, Nik Nazmi also affirmed the party's commitment to an open and dialogue-centered strategy in addressing national concerns and crafting policies.

This statement comes in light of criticisms suggesting the unity government has been slow in addressing public concerns and countering misinformation.

He also acknowledged that while some political parties might opt for swifter or more predefined responses, the party's approach prioritises a thorough comprehension of issues over immediate reactions.

"We should not feel obligated to be defensive or apologetic regarding our inclination for an inclusive and consultative approach.

"This approach ensures that we take into account all necessary perspectives before initiating action," he stated.
