Mahathir challenges Anwar to call for general election to test support [NSTTV]

PUTRAJAYA: Former two-time Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has challenged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to call for a general election (GE) today.

Dr Mahathir said the GE is to prove that Anwar still has the strong support of the people.

He claimed that Anwar has no idea how to tackle the economic, political and social problems in the country.

"This man (Anwar) has become prime minister by default, not because he was elected.

"But during my time, I think every election I won with a two thirds majority, the people had a chance to throw me out. If I had abused my position, the people had a chance to throw me out.

"I challenge Anwar to call for a GE today whether he dares or nor to see what the people would say," he said at a press conference at the Perdana Leadership Foundation building, here, today.

He added that Anwar is also afraid of his own shadow by claiming that there is an effort to topple the government such as the Dubai move.

"He (Anwar) doesn't know how to help the rakyat. So, he keeps on wanting to fight corruption. But he himself has released those involved in corruption," he said.
