Umno calls for swift establishment of gig economy commission

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno wants the government to expedite the establishment of the Malaysian Gig Economy Commission (SEGiM) to safeguard the welfare and rights of gig economy workers.

Its secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said this decision was made during the party's supreme council meeting, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi last night.

"The meeting addressed the memorandum from the p-hailing representatives which urged swift action on their demands.

"Therefore, we unanimously agree to call on the government to swiftly establish the SEGiM, ensuring the preservation of the welfare and rights of gig economy workers in Malaysia," he said during the press conference last night.

Prior to the meeting, the Malaysian P-Hailing Delivery Association deputy president Abdul Hakim Abdul Rani submitted the memorandum of demands from the p-hailing companies.

The memorandum outlined 10 requests, including reverting to the RM5 rate for food pickup and delivery for every 2km.

Additionally, they are seeking a bonus of RM0.60 for pickups within 2km and RM0.40 for each subsequent kilometre.

Asyraf also expressed appreciation to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the government for consistently advocating for the rights of the Palestinian people, leading to a positive decision by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) based on the case brought by South Africa.

The ICJ in The Hague handed down its verdict in a landmark case brought by Pretoria also ordering Israel to allow humanitarian access to the Palestinian territory.

In another development, Dr Asyraf also announced that the Umno Economic and Financial Council, chaired by Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, is set to organise the Bumiputera Economic Congress Colloquium.

"The colloquium will be held on Feb 3 at Dewan Merdeka, World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur. It is a collaboration between Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) and the Economy Ministry.

"The resolutions from this colloquium will be presented at the Bumiputera Economic Congress scheduled for Feb 29, March 1, and March 2, 2024."

Dr Asyraf added that the Umno general assembly is scheduled for Aug 21 to 24 this year.

"Umno branch meeting will be held from April 22 to June 2, 2024. Meanwhile, Umno Division Delegates and Women, Youth and Puteri Division delegates meetings will occur from June 21 to July 29, 2024."
