The sacking of Bersatu sec-gen: It's the president's prerogative

KUALA LUMPUR: A Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) leader has shot down rumours on the alleged sacking of its secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin ahead of the party's meeting, tonight.

In dismissing the claims, Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said any sacking of the party's leadership was under the prerogative of its president, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

"This is not true… I have seen the rumour and it is not true unless it is confirmed by the president himself (Muhyiddin). "This is also because the appointment or removal of the party's secretary-general is under the president's prerogative and (it has) nothing to do with the supreme council," he said when contacted.

Wan Fayhsal, however, kept mum when asked about the party's supreme council meeting agenda tonight. Previously, rumours were rife about Hamzah's sacking as the party's secretary-general at the meeting scheduled to be held tonight.

The rumours came after Bukit Gantang member of parliament Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz claimed that a significant portion of Bersatu lawmakers had expressed hopes for Hamzah to lead the party.

He also alleged that Bersatu currently has two factions, with one supporting Muhyiddin's leadership and another backing Hamzah.

Syed Abu Hussin also stated that the Bersatu's annual general assembly held in November last year had provided an opportunity for the party to undergo changes after Muhyiddin announced to not defend his position.

The changes, however, did not materialise as Muhyiddin backtracked his decision, said Syed Abu Hussin.
