No call yet: Bersatu MP ready to walk if party constitution amended

KOTA BARU: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) lawmaker Mohd Azizi Abu Naim said he has not received any call from the party's leaders following his statement on Thursday.

In a brief reply to the New Straits Times, the Gua Musang member of Parliament said he has decided to vacate his seat should the party amend its constitution.

It was reported that two Bersatu lawmakers are ready to vacate their seats should the party amend its constitution to prohibit its members from declaring support for other parties in the future.

"So far, I have not received any call from them. On this issue, I refuse to give further comment as I have already made the decision," Azizi said.

Azizi was among two Bersatu MPs from Kelantan who declared their support for the prime minister last year.

In a recent joint press conference in Parliament, Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (PN-Bukit Gantang) and Azizi said such a decision was made after considering the implications of the constitution if it were amended retrospectively.

Both of the Bersatu MPs who declared support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's administration last year also said that the support was voluntarily made without influence from any parties or containing any remuneration elements.

Previously, Bersatu announced its plans to conduct a special general assembly to discuss the amendment of the party's constitution, aimed at preventing more members and leaders from switching support.

Syed Abu Hussin, Mohd Azizi, and four other MPs, namely Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Datuk Dr Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), and Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang), have declared their support for Anwar.
