Ex-Tangga Batu Umno chief stripped of Umno membership after joining Bersatu, says Asyraf

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has revoked its former Melaka liaison committee deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Ali Mohamad's party membership after he decided to join Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).

The matter was confirmed by Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

"He was not sacked. However, his Umno membership has been stripped automatically after joining Bersatu," Asyraf told the New Straits Times.

Asyraf was commenting on reports which said the Umno Supreme Council had on Friday sacked the former Tangga Batu Umno chief.

The report, which quoted party sources, said the matter was decided upon during the Umno Supreme Council meeting chaired by party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

"He was sacked from the party for joining Bersatu," said the party source, who is also an Umno Supreme Council member.

Last month, Asyraf said Umno would convene a meeting to discuss Mohamad Ali's fate who was reported to submit membership form to Bersatu.

The matter, he said, would be discussed with Zahid following an official complaint lodged by the Tangga Batu division recently.

Asyraf said evidence of Mohamad Ali's membership in Bersatu was also submitted in the report lodged.
