Children have no place in politics

IT comes as no surprise that DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng seems to have forgotten that one should not indoctrinate the young, as evidenced by his latest act of hypocrisy, which has been laid bare yet again.

Initially, Lim refused to debate the Penang undersea tunnel issue or admit that he is acquainted with a Datuk Seri, reportedly under investigation for graft.

And, last weekend, Lim decided it was fine to be more hypocritical by inviting children to sing a song mocking the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

(Lim reportedly came under fire over a 32-second video of him allegedly dancing and mocking the Goods and Services Tax (GST) policy in an ABC song at the launch of a tuition centre in George Town last weekend.)

I find this hypocritical because Pakatan had constantly made known their ire of Biro Tatanegara, accusing it of “government brainwashing”.

Are children fair play for political indoctrination? If we seek fair politics, then children should be exempted from any political play, message, hate speech forums or included in protests. Yet, it seems there is no end to Pakatan’s and DAP’s hypocrisy on this matter.

If we truly seek mature politics, children and their parents should be told why the GST exists, how it works and why the prices of goods increase.

Is this the act of the once-touted and honourable leader who wished for more debates, the exclusion of children from politics, and pushed for a clean
and transparent government without corruption?

It seems that DAP and Lim, in particular, have forgotten all of this and his roots among Malaysian voters, who have supported him for a decade.

What happens if the future government abolishes GST and chooses to reintroduce it later?

That would be the same as how Pakatan made its humongous U-turn after 20 years by accepting (former prime minister) Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. It would be the same as Dr M suddenly saying anything and everything that contradicted his past actions, including the arrest of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for sodomy.

And, when such things happen, will Lim bear the blame or put it on someone else? Will he own up and be accountable or, like in the case of the Penang undersea tunnel, blame everyone else, but himself?

Voters are not stupid, especially youth. They will see that Lim is being hypocritical, and will want him to be accountable for it.
