Good nutrition helps keep you healthy

I REFER to the letter “Sweet kills: “How over-consumption of sugar is making Malaysians obese and sick” (NST, April 23).

Sugar has been described as the enemy of good health. Many people do not realise the hidden dangers of sugar.

The government has postponed the implementation of sugar tax on soft drinks and juices from April 1 to July 1.

This is to give manufacturers and the Customs Department more time to prepare themselves. The sugar tax is part of efforts to promote a healthy lifestyle. Meanwhile, food operators are encouraged to prepare food and beverages with low sugar content.

I have a nephew who loves to eat sugar-laden food. Due to fewer outdoor activities, he is unable to burn off the calories.

The effects of a sedentary lifestyle can be direct or indirect. One of the direct effects is an increase in body mass index leading to obesity. Weight gain is inevitable if you regularly eat more calories than you can burn.

Sugar is is vital to our body but we need to consume it in small quantities.

Drink lots of water and excercise at least four times a week for a healthier lifestyle. Besides preventing dehydration, water helps the kidneys to flush out excess blood sugar through urine.

Most of us do not drink enough water every day. About 60 per cent of the human body is made up of water and most of the body’s processes use water.

Also, when we drink plenty of water, we can lose weight.

Eat fruits as they are not just delicious but contain lots of vitamins and minerals. Do not rely on vitamin pills alone. Eat fruits like watermelon, avocado, apple, kiwi and papaya. They contain their own medicinal properties. Some can reduce excess sugar.

Do not forget to eat vegetables as they can improve the body’s immune system. Even if you do not like vegetables, force yourself to eat them every day.

Good health comes from eating a variety of nutritious food, being physically active and taking sufficient nutrients to protect your bones and immune system, as well as ensuring your physical and mental wellbeing.
