Face mask: To wear or not to wear?

LETTERS: I would like to give four reasons why everyone should wear a face mask in public as much as possible.

Firstly, there have been new reports to suggest that this coronavirus may also spread in the air and not just via droplets when one coughs or sneezes or via physical contact.

Secondly, it has been established that many infected people do not show any symptoms until much later and for some, it would be so mild that it may not be obvious.

There are also carriers who may not show any symptoms at all. Therefore, we must assume the worst case scenario that a person may be infected and should therefore wear a face mask regardless of any symptoms.

Thirdly, while the face mask is mainly for preventing or minimising the germs of the infected person to pass on to others, the face mask can also protect the receiving person.

Fourthly, when you are in a public area or supermarket, it is almost impossible to ensure that you are always at a distance of 2 metres or more from others. Therefore, there is no harm to have an additional safeguard like a face mask.

In China, South Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore, everyone is encouraged to wear a face mask in public, regardless of whether or not the person has any symptoms.
