West treating world like fools over Palestine

LETTERS: I support the NST Leader's stand on Israel, calling Zionism a wicked ideology and how the so-called West, so adamant about protecting human rights, is treating the rest of the world like fools when it comes to the issue of the rights of the people in Palestine.

The move by the Israeli apartheid state declaring six Palestinian human rights organisations as terror organisations is another evidence of the hypocrisy of the Zionist state.

For the last few months, there have been moves made by organisations and people of integrity against the Zionist state, complementing the campaign, especially by the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS), a Palestinian-led movement for freedom, justice and equality.

Irish author Sally Rooney, for example, turned down an offer from an Israeli publisher to translate her latest work, Beautiful World, Where Are You, due to her stand on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

She voiced support for the BDS campaign to "end international support for Israel's oppression of Palestinians and pressure Israel to comply with international law".

In another example, Mandla Mandela, the grandson of the former South African president, also urged countries to boycott the Miss Universe event in Israel in December, because of the occupation of Palestine.

He urged former Miss South Africa winners to boycott the event to protest the "occupation and cruel treatment of Palestinians at the hands of the apartheid Israeli regime", according to a news portal.

While a book by a writer and an urging by a distinguished person will not overly trouble Israel, the Zionist state will be more concerned about the decision by 11 US lawmakers to cast a no vote or abstain from providing continued funding for the Iron Dome missile system.

An Israeli ambassador denounced the lawmakers and used the now common excuse of anti-Semitism against them, while also claiming that the defence system saved Israelis and Palestinians.

The fact that Israel is the occupier is enough reason for the world to act to protect Palestinians and to help them be independent and free. It's been, after all, more than eight decades of occupation.

Therefore, hats off to Ireland for not mincing words about the Israeli occupation. Early this year, Ireland's Parliament voted to condemn Israel's "de facto annexation" of Palestinian land.

This was the first time the phrase was used by a European Union government in relation to Israel, according to The Guardian.

I also share the NST Leader's belief that the majority of the world are behind the Palestinians, who are the victims of the Western powers' hypocrisy about the right to be free from subjugation and oppression.

Therefore, Malaysia, together with other like-minded countries, must continue to support the people of Palestine at the United Nations and other international organisations until they achieve independence in the true sense of the word.
