Robots can replace foreign labour in some sectors

LETTERS: We have to overcome the human resources shortage in some sectors of our economy. The Look East Policy may hold an answer. But, this time, it should be about learning from China.

China has progressed by leaps and bounds in the past two to three decades. Its technological status is comparable with the United States and even surpasses America in some areas.

We need to send our electrical and electronic engineers and technicians to China to learn automation and robotic science.

China used robots to prepare food and serve the delegates and athletes at the Winter Olympics this year. No other country had done this. So, we should start robotisation in sectors such as manufacturing and services.

This will reduce our dependence on foreign workers and reduce the massive outflow of foreign exchange. It is essential that the government help businesses adopt robotic technology. This could come in the form of subsidies or soft loans from government-linked banks.
