Enforce speed limit on drivers of heavy vehicles

LETTERS: On a recent trip to Johor, I saw many heavy vehicles speeding and overtaking on the fast lane.

Gone are the days when heavy vehicles hover behind smaller ones and honk or flash their lights to tell others to make way. These days, heavy vehicles can overtake smaller ones and speed away.

On my recent drive, buses, container lorries, petrol tankers and trailers loaded with new vehicles for delivery were speeding on the fast lane.

The irony is that at the back of these speeding heavy vehicles were big labels indicating their speed limits of 80 to 90kph.

On the highway, there are signboards at certain stretches to state where heavy vehicles are not allowed to overtake. However, despite such reminders, they flout them.

The perception is that heavy vehicles, being bigger, impose themselves on other road users.

Furthermore, when these heavy vehicles are without a load, more often than not, they will be speeding. Out-of-control speeding heavy vehicles are often the cause of accidents.

Heavy vehicles that go beyond the speed limit will often veer into the opposite side of the road when they have to brake suddenly.

We need to enforce the speed limit of these heavy vehicles. Let us act now before we lose more lives on our roads.
