Smooth traffic for TMM24

AS a proud Melakan, I wholeheartedly support the Visit Melaka Year 2024 (TMM24) initiative.

However, my experience during the New Year holiday has shed light on issues that could impact visitors' experience.

I urge the state government to address these concerns, with a focus on traffic.

STREAMLINING TRAFFIC FLOW: The journey from the Ayer Keroh toll plaza to Melaka town is marred by traffic congestion, especially during peak hours, public holidays, weekends and festive periods.

My proposal is to introduce a green-wave system for through traffic on the main highway.

This system would prioritise the seamless flow of vehicles, minimising stops at traffic lights, and ensuring a more efficient and enjoyable journey for visitors.

Synchronised traffic signals allow vehicles traveling to Melaka town to proceed with fewer interruptions.

CITY CENTRE TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT: The area around St Paul's Hill, Clock Tower and Jonker Street faces traffic jams, especially when certain roads are closed.

Efforts should be intensified to reduce congestion in this area, especially during weekends.

The authorities must facilitate parking alternatives for those who choose to drive, minimising the inconvenience caused by road closures;

PARKING SOLUTIONS: Finding parking near tourist hotspots is a challenge. The government should explore creative solutions such as converting open spaces into temporary parking areas.

A free shuttle bus service can transport visitors from these parking zones to Melaka town;

HANDLING MAJOR EVENTS: Anticipating major events, like the Sikh function at the Melaka Gurdwara becomes paramount in TMM24.

In normal years, the sheer size of the worshippers is substantial.

However, 2024 is a special year where Sikhs from all corners of the globe are likely to converge on not only to participate in the religious function but also to explore Melaka.

The government should meet the gurdwara committee.

Planning is essential to address the influx of visitors, ensuring smooth traffic flow (due to the closure of Jalan Temenggong where the gurdwara is sited) and providing an enhanced experience for worshippers and tourists;

USING ABANDONED SPACES: To alleviate parking woes on Jalan Bandar Hilir, consider using the empty car park at the abandoned Equatorial Hotel.

This move could provide a solution for visitors, encouraging foot traffic to tourist sites within walking distance.
