Retirees disappointed there is no pension increment

LETTERS: Many retired civil servants were disappointed that the annual two per cent pension increment they had been receiving for the past few years was not added this time.

Pensioners had been anticipating an increase in their payment. Since it was not added, it was a sad day for them.

Based on the June 2023 Federal Court ruling, pensioners will not enjoy any benefit until a salary adjustment is carried out for civil servants.

The court ruled that the increased payments by two per cent annually introduced in 2013 were unconstitutional.

Though the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) has urged the government to maintain the annual increment for pensioners until the government carries out a pension adjustment for civil servants, it has been withdrawn.

Many pensioners have been enjoying the increment since 2013 when it was implemented.

They have seen their pension increase every year in January. Many had kept their fingers crossed for this month and were disappointed when the increment was not added.

Retirees hope the government would expedite the salary adjustment for civil servants to enable a review of the pension adjustment.
