Outdoor diners risking their lives

LETTERS: An incident involving a motorcyclist avoiding a roadblock by riding through tables and chairs outside a restaurant in Port Klang on Jan 2 should be a wake-up call for us.

Fortunately, no diners were present. Despite accidents in the past where an outdoor diner was either killed or sustained serious injuries, the authorities have remained silent.

In 2018, a female diner at an open air restaurant in Taman Equine, Serdang, Selangor, was killed after a four-wheel drive pick-up truck skidded and slammed into diners.

Four others were injured. The driver also crashed into three other vehicles before fleeing the scene.

The accident was the second in which a diner in a parking lot was killed. In 2020, a car ploughed into diners in a parking bay in Section 14, Petaling Jaya.

The message is, don't wait for another accident to act. Restaurants in Subang Jaya place tables and chairs on walkways and parking bays.

Families are risking their lives dining in parking bays in front of shops in SS14/1, Selangor.

Tables and chairs are placed as soon as offices are closed in the evening. Parking bays are meant for vehicles, not diners.

Please don't wait for another diner to be mowed down before action is taken.

Local councils should ban outdoor dining, and eateries should also be barred from placing tables and chairs on parking bays.
