Let's take our talents abroad

LETTERS: In the discourse surrounding brain drain and brain gain, there's one aspect that merits deeper consideration — the underexplored avenue for Malaysians to contribute their talents and expertise to international organisations.

Malaysia boasts a pool of exceptionally talented individuals, evident in their numerous achievements and accolades on national and international platforms.

Yet, there seems to be a noticeable gap when it comes to Malaysians occupying positions in international bodies, such as the United Nations, World Bank, Asean Secretariat and others.

The reason lies in a combination of factors, chiefly due to a sense of complacency and reluctance to venture beyond familiar shores.

Many Malaysians have confined themselves to the comforts of home, unaware of the myriad opportunities that await on the international stage.

It's time for a paradigm shift. By venturing into these realms, we stand to gain a wealth of experiences that not only enrich our personal and professional lives but also contribute to the development of the nation.

Working in international organisations offers Malaysians the chance to collaborate with individuals from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives.

This exposure fosters a broader understanding of global issues and instils skills in cross-cultural communication, cooperation, and problem-solving.

The wealth of knowledge and insight that can be brought back to Malaysia will enhance our capacity to tackle complex challenges on the home front too.

Furthermore, the financial incentives are undeniable. International organisations offer competitive salaries, often in US dollars, which not only provide financial security but also contribute to our foreign exchange reserves when remitted back home.

With the US dollar now hovering at the RM4.80 mark, isn't this enough motivation and incentive for us?

Importantly, Malaysians who choose to work abroad retain their citizenship and identity, serving as ambassadors for Malaysia. Their achievements and contributions reflect positively on our nation

The perks and privileges afforded to those working in international organisations are not to be overlooked.

From diplomatic status to duty-free privileges and seamless travel arrangements, these benefits enhance the overall experience and further incentivise Malaysians to explore opportunities overseas.

As someone who has experienced firsthand the respect and admiration that Malaysians garner in international settings, I can attest to the immense potential that lies within our people.

It's time to unlock that potential and unleash it onto the global stage

The first step is to scan the webpages of these international organisations to determine if there are positions that match our qualifications, skills and knowledge. I can vouch that the salary scale of international organisations are on a par with that of multinational companies.

Apply to fill a vacant position and if you are qualified, you will be interviewed with all expenses, including return air flight, accommodation and daily allowances paid for by the organisation.

I urge fellow Malaysians to embrace the opportunities that await them in international organisations. Let's step outside our comfort zones, broaden our horizons, and seize the chance to release Malaysia's full potential on the global stage.
