Use colours to spread awareness of autism

LETTERS: The theme of World Autism Awareness Day, celebrated on April 2, revolves around the power of colours to spread awareness and understanding of autism.

Colours play a significant role in conveying emotions and messages. Each colour represents a different aspect of autism, from creativity to challenges faced by those with autism.

By embracing this theme of colour, we can celebrate the beautiful spectrum of differences that make each autistic person unique.

There are steps we can take to help children with autism.

Understand the triggers and create sensory-friendly environments to reduce sensory overload, for example, minimising noise, bright lights and strong smells.

We can also provide a quiet space where they can retreat whenever they feel overwhelmed.

We should also encourage children with autism to choose their environment and sensory experiences. This can help them to be independent and encourage self-advocacy to support their needs and choices.

For socialisation, get children with autism to participate in community activities, such as sports, clubs or volunteer work, to develop their social skills and build relationships outside the family and school environment.

Finally, for parents with autistic children, it is advisable to celebrate the success of their children, no matter how small, as this will help them build their confidence and foster acceptance.

On World Autism Awareness Day, let's embark on a journey of understanding and acceptance.

Together, we can shatter stereotypes, dispel misconceptions and champion the rights of those with autism.
