Feng Shui: Added warmth, excitement with red

MANY people love red. It is the colour of energy, passion and action. It gives confidence and awakens our physical life force.

In Eastern cultures, such as China, red is the colour for good luck. In Indian culture, it symbolises purity and is often used in wedding gowns.

In Feng Shui, red is considered the fire element; the colour of warmth and excitement. Most houses will, in some way or another, spot red colour — either a red door, wall, curtains, bedroom sets, dining sets, sofas, rug or red vases, among other things — as they believe it would bring luck and generate positive energy.

When it comes to decorating your house with red, be it the bedroom, bathroom or living room, find out where the colour is best for you.

Many believe that having a red door or painting your living room red, especially the wall that faces the entrance, will bring good luck. But if you ask Feng Shui practitioners, they will tell you it all depends on the position of your front door.

According to www.thespruce.com, if you have a south or southwest facing front door, then red is an excellent choice for your house. However, if your front door faces east, west or northwest, then red may not be suitable. The reason lies in the interaction of the five Feng Shui elements and specific energies they bring to each area of your house (when properly applied).

It also suggests that be careful with a strong presence of red because some areas in your house may not work along with it.

“The east bagua area is an obvious Feng Shui example, where a red decor scheme should be avoided.”

If you plan to have red in the living, dining or kitchen areas, go for striking accents rather than overall room colour. Red carpet, rugs, art, chairs, lighting and kitchen appliances are often the easiest way to bring the colour into these areas. Some red flowers and candles will also lighten the mood and add to the ambience.
