Malaysia again second best

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s wait for the badminton men’s team gold medal continues following their 3-0 defeat to Indonesia in the final of the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games on Thursday.

The gold medal is also Indonesia’s fourth consecutive title since the 2007 edition in Korat, Thailand.

In the opening men’s singles match, Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin, did his best but it was not good enough to see off Indonesia’s current No 1 Jonatan Christie, who chalked up a 21-18, 21-17 win.

Malaysia’s men’s doubles Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi, then took to court but even they succumbed to a 21-12, 16-21, 21-14 defeat to Alfian Fajar-Muhammad Rian Ardianto.

The onus was on 19-year-old Lee Zii Jia to keep Malaysia’s hopes alive, but Indonesia’s Ihsan Maulana Mustofa was just too good, as he raced to a 21-11, 21-11 win in just 29 minutes.

The bronze medal for the men’s team event went to Singapore and Thailand.

The individual event for all five disciplines will begin on Saturday.
