Malaysia's only mixed doubles pair through to second round of Japan Open Super Series

KUALA LUMPUR: Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie is the only Malaysian mixed doubles pair through to the second round of the Japan Open Super Series Tuesday.

The Kuala Lumpur Sea Games (KL2017) silver medallists made up for their disappointing exit in the quarter-finals of the Korea Open last week, when they fought hard to chalk up a 21-14, 19-21, 21-19 win over Denmark's Mathias Christiansen-Sara Thygesen in the opening round at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.

Soon Huat-Shevon will have a one day break, before facing the winner of Wednesday's first round match between Japan's Takuro Hoki-Sayaka Hirota and Kohei Gondo-Wakana Nagahara, on the following day.

Credit, however, must be given to Chan Peng Soon-Cheah Yee See, who fought hard before succumbing to a 21-17, 21-17 defeat to world No. 2 Lu Kai-Huang Yaqiong.

Youngster Yee See, who was only paired with Olympic silver medallist Chan Peng Soon four months ago, admitted that the gap in quality against the China pair was just too big.

"They were too strong and too fast for me," said Yee See, when contacted.

"I must push myself harder if I want to match top pairs in the future. I have to be hardworking, and focus more on my quality and strength."

Peng Soon-Yee See, who bagged the Russian Open title in June will head home first before traveling to Almere for the Dutch Open next month.

Meanwhile, world No. 10 Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing, suffered another early exit when they lost 22-20, 23-21 to Thailand's Bodin Isara-Savitree Amitrapai.

Last week, Kian Meng-Pei Jing were sent packing in the second round of the Korea Open by teammates Soon Huat-Shevon.

The remaining first round matches for the mixed doubles and other disciplines will start on Wednesday.
