World Junior Championships: Ee Wei breezes through 2 events, moves into 4th round

KUALA LUMPUR: Playing in two events on the same day is no easy feat but Toh Ee Wei has proven otherwise, when she checked into the fourth round of both the girls and mixed doubles event at the World Junior Championships in Yogyakarta, Indonesia on Wednesday.

Ee Wei, who partners Ng Eng Cheong in mixed doubles, barely broke a sweat as they saw off China's Feng Yanzhe-Chen Yingxue 21-12, 21-9 in the third round.

In the girls' doubles third round, Ee Wei, who partners Pearly Tan, clawed back from a game down to score a 19-21, 21-8, 21-14 win over Nur Insyirah Khan-Crystal Wong of Singapore.

"I wasn't really concerned of our opponents, instead I focused on collecting points one after the other. It's definitely tiring to play in two high level matches but when I put my mind to it, I don't really feel it," said Ee Wei, who hails from Melaka.

The 18-year-old shuttler added that her challenge at the world meet will only get tougher with each passing day.

"It surely won't get easier but I am not worried about that. I will do what I have been doing and that is to collect points and try to win matches," explained the mixed doubles bronze medal winner from the previous edition in Bilbao, Spain last year.

Meanwhile, two other Malaysian mixed doubles duo – Chang Yee Jun-Pearly and Man Wei Chong-Tan Sueh Jeou – followed suit by booking their place in the fourth round.

Thirteenth seed Yee Jun-Pearly saw off England's Callum Hemming-Hope Warner 21-18, 21-12, while Wei Chong-Sueh Jeou upset sixth seeds Thom Gicquel-Vimala Heriau 21-15, 24-22.

In the singles event, reigning Asian junior champion Leong Jun Hao cruised into the fifth round of the boys event when he beat Johnnie Torjussen of England 21-8, 21-14. Fourth seeded Jun Hao, plays France's Leo Rossi next for a place in the quarter-finals, on Thursday.

In the girls singles event, 2015 champion Goh Jin Wei reached the fifth round when she notched a 21-14, 21-13 win over Canada's Catherine Choi. The Kuala Lumpur Sea Games (KL2017) gold medallist will play Indonesia's Choirunnisa Choirunnisa next.

Eoon Qi Xuan is the other Malaysian girls' singles to reach the fifth round after chalking up a 20-22, 21-18, 21-12 win over Taiwan's Huang Yin Hsuan.
