Marital bliss fires up V Shem's determination

KUALA LUMPUR: A source of inspiration which ignites determination, this was the answer given by national men’s doubles player Goh V Shem after he celebrated tying the knot with his new wife, Miyoki Wong Pui Mei at their wedding reception held at a well-known hotel here earlier tonight.

V Shem who won a silver medal with Tan Wee Kiong at the 2016 Rio Olympics had already officially registered his marriage to Pui Mei on May 7.

Before that, V Shem who hails from Setapak had proposed to the love of his life on Valentine’s Day earlier this year while dining at a restaurant in Bukit Damansara.

According to the 28-year-old badminton player, he was very anxious and nervous just before the wedding reception which is a momentous occasion that he said he will cherish for the rest of his life.

"I am now hoping for much more better things to come next year,” said V Shem, who has known and been in a relationship with Pui Mei, who hails from Kepong, for the past seven years.

He explained that getting hitched and settling down will be just the motivation he needs to face the new season next year, as he resumes his playing career partnering Tan Wee Kiong once again

Because of a tight schedule as a national badminton player, V Shem said he could only hold the wedding reception tonight, which was attended by some 700 guests.

The wedding ceremony was made even merrier for the newlyweds as BA of Malaysia president, Datuk Seri Mohamad Norza Zakaria was in attendance to join in the celebrations.

Both past and present national badminton players also attended the reception to celebrate V Shem’s marriage to Pui Mei.

V Shem and Pui Mei, 29, a graphic designer by profession, did their pre-wedding photoshoot in Austria.

Earlier, BAM separated V Shem and Wee Kiong after the pair experienced a dip in performance. However because of new rules and regulations for the new season by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) where world ranking becomes the deciding factor to feature in top, prestigious tournaments, the both of them have been reunited.
