Jin Wei, Soniia lead Asian meet team

KUALA LUMPUR: Former world junior champion Goh Jin Wei and KL Sea Games runner-up Soniia Cheah are sure bets for the Asian Team Championships on Feb 6-11 in Alor Star.

The tournament doubles up as a qualifier for the Uber Cup Final on May 20-27 in Bangkok.

National coach Tey Seu Bock confirmed that Jin Wei and Soniia are in his Asian meet list on Tuesday, but said the two other slots will be decided after three upcoming international tournaments.

He will evaluate others in the Thailand Masters, Malaysia Masters and Indonesia Masters.

"We have not finalised our women's Asian meet team, but Jin Wei and Soniia are sure bets for the Uber Cup qualifiers," said Seu Bock at the Malaysia Badminton Academy on Tuesday.

"I will evaluate the others in three upcoming tournaments for the remaining two slots (third and reserve singles)."

On expectations, Seu Bock admitted that pressure is there as his team have no chance of earning an automatic Uber Cup berth due to their low ranking.

"We need to qualify for the semi-finals in Alor Star in order to play in the Uber Cup Final.

"But it will not be easy as we will be up against China, Japan, South Korea and Thailand in the qualifiers.

"Taiwan and India are also strong.

"I hope Jin Wei and Soniia along with the others will do well in the upcoming three tournaments to improve our team's overall ranking," he added.
