Daren willing to put national interest first

BUKIT JALIL: Independent shuttler Liew Daren is willing to represent the national team, if selected, in next month’s Asia Team Championship in Alor Star.

Daren, who quit the BA of Malaysia (BAM) in 2016, is currently enjoying a good run in form with back-to-back semi-final appearances at the Thailand Masters and the Malaysia Masters.

On Saturday, Daren - who now plays for club side Puchong United - fell short in his bid to reach the final of the Malaysia Masters at the Axiata Arena when he went down 21-15, 21-10 to World No 1 and reigning world champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark.

When asked about the possibility of being part of the Asian meet squad, Daren said: "Well, this decision is for the BA of Malaysia (BAM) to make. I cannot say anything about it.”

"However, the Asian Team Championship clashes with the Purple League Finals (in Genting).

"Having said that, if BAM would want to list my name, I will have to make arrangements,” said Daren.

On being a professional player, Daren said he has gotten used to playing matches without a coach.

His main goal for the season is to break into the top 50 and win some titles.

"I think I am already used to playing without a coach during matches.

"My main goal this year is to improve my ranking. I dropped a little last year, so hopefully I can break into the top 50 this year, and then maybe win some titles,” he added.
