Chong Wei's coach gets lucrative offer from Thailand

KUALA LUMPUR: Tey Seu Bock's expertise as a badminton coach has attracted the interest of several countries, including Thailand.

It is learnt that the BA of Thailand (BAT) had offered Seu Bock a position to head the men's singles department last month.

According to a source close to the national women's singles head coach, Seu Bock turned down the offer, remaining loyal to the BA of Malaysia (BAM).

"Seu Bock believes he still has much to offer to the national women's singles department. In fact, he was just promoted last year.

"He is a man of vision. Knowing Seu Bock, he is someone who will not quit if he hasn't completed his task.

"Although the offer from BAT was a lucrative one, Seu Bock chose to put his country's interest first," said the source.

Before taking up the post of women's singles head coach last July, Seu Bock was a key figure in the men's singles department, especially as coach for Lee Chong Wei.

Former World No 1 Chong Wei reached three Olympic finals (2008, 2012 and 2016) with Seu Bock playing a pivotal role behind his success.

It is evident that other countries are in favour of Malaysian coaches.

Seu Bock is not the first Malaysian to receive an overseas offer. Former men's doubles coach Jeremy Gan quit BAM last year after receiving an offer from Japan.

BAM also saw the departure of former women's singles coach Wong Tat Meng, who took up an offer to be Scotland's head coach, while Tan Kim Her left the national fold to be doubles chief coach in India.
