Jin Wei wants to earn Commonwealth debut

KUALA LUMPUR: Former world junior champion Goh Jin Wei is well aware of the tough challenge ahead, if she wants to come good at the National Championships at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

The 18-year-old singles shuttler, fighting for a spot in the Commonwealth Games squad, is in the same half as national teammates S. Kisona and Lim Yin Fun.

Jin Wei, when contacted on Tuesday, a day before the main draw, said: "I must admit that it won't be easy for me.

"I know I have to perform if I want to secure my place in the Commonwealth Games squad, but I am in the same half as Kisona and Yin Fun, who have been playing well and know my game too.

"The final decision lies in the hand of our head coach (Tey Seu Bock), but I will fight hard because I really want to play in my first Commonwealth Games."

It is learnt that the women's singles is the only discipline that has yet to confirm a player for the Games. Closing date for entries is on March 7.

On her condition ahead of the National Championships, Jin Wei added: "We have been training really hard, so there are some aches and sores.

"I am not at my best right now, but that is no excuse. There is only one spot for women's singles, so I will fight hard to try and earn it."

The other shuttler hoping to book her spot is national No 1 Soniia Cheah.

Soniia, who will also be traveling to Europe with Jin Wei (for the German Open and All England), plays Selangor's R. Shalini in the opening round of the National Championships.

Jin Wei will face Sabah's Samin Arena Satu in the first round.
