Chong Wei fired up for team battle

GOLD COAST: It seems that nothing can stop Lee Chong Wei from achieving his goals at the ongoing Commonwealth Games.

The Malaysian declared today that he is in good shape and motivated as he helped Malaysia to top Group D in the mixed team competition and qualify for the quarter-finals.

Earlier today, Chong Wei did not play in the 5-0 win over Seychelles, but returned on court in the 4-1 win over Canada at the Carrara Sports Complex.

Chong Wei will equal former national player Koo Kien Keat's Commonwealth Games record of five gold if he leads Malaysia to the mixed team title.

And the former World No 1 will become the most successful Malaysian in the games if he wins the men's singles gold medal.

"I am not under any pressure here. In fact, I am enjoying my stay in Gold Coast and I hope to achieve a golden outing here," said Chong Wei.

The World No 6 added that 2018 is an important year as it could very well be his last season.

India, the top seeds, are expected to play second seeds Malaysia in the mixed team final on Monday.

However, Indian badminton queen Saina Nehwal is not thinking too much on the final yet. "It is tough in a team event. The entire team need to play well. We are not thinking too much about the final and Malaysia, as we still have matches to get past.”
