Unhappy coach tells June Wei to come out of slump

KUALA LUMPUR: National men's singles coach, Sairul Amar Ayob wants Cheam June Wei to come out from his slump, ahead of the Australian Open first round on Wednesday.

Sairul was not at all pleased, when the 21-year-old shuttler crashed out in the opening round of the New Zealand Open last week, after putting up a half-baked performance against India's Lakshya Sen.

"I am not happy. June Wei's performance was so poor, that it wasn't surprising for him to be knocked out early," said Sairul when contacted on Monday.

According to Sairul, the Dutch International Series champion must show improvement.

"I expect him to do more. I know he has been slowly moving up the ranks, but I am not satisfied," added Sairul, who is also a former international.

June Wei, who did not make the cut for the upcoming Thomas Cup in Bangkok, will open his campaign in Sydney against a qualifier.

Sairul admitted that his trainee is still finding it hard to impress at even the International Series and International Challenge stage. "He must show more commitment if he wants to come out of his slump. I see him struggling. In bigger tournaments, he gets knocked out early and that is not good," Sairul lamented.

June Wei, is currently ranked World No 82. His best results this year, apart from the Dutch International Series, are finishing second at the Austrian and Finnish Opens.

The other Malaysian, who will take to court on Wednesday. is Chong Yee Han who will face Australian shuttler, Athony Joe.
