11-point scoring will be boring, says Axelsen

BANGKOK: World No 1 Viktor Axelsen wants the Badminton World Federation (BWF) to stick to the present 21-point best of three games scoring system.

According to the Danish ace, fans and players alike will lose out on the physical aspect of the game, if the BWF shorten a match by implementing the 11x5 scoring system.

Citing the women's singles final at the World Championships last year between India's P.V. Sindhu and eventual champion Nozomi Okuhara of Japan, Axelsen believes it's the intensity of the sport that makes an impression on the minds of the viewers.

"I think it's pretty late to make the changes, as we don't have much time to the Olympics (Tokyo 2020).

"Also I think changing the format to the 11-point scoring system might take out the more physical part of the game. Seeing Nozomi and Sindhu play in the World Championships final, it was an epic match where both players were at their limits physically.

"I'm afraid we won't see that as much if we play to 11 points, even though it's over five games.

"Some matches might be boring to watch if there's a huge difference in the level of the players. It's the physical part of the game, which I really enjoy, that won't be there as much.

"I feel the 21-point system is fine, there is no problem, so perhaps it's best to just stick to how things are at the moment," said Axelsen on Saturday.

On Denmark's Thomas Cup title defence, Axelsen said: “I think we have a strong team, but then again I believe there are many other strong teams this year.

"Two years ago, everything worked in our favour and we delivered. We have to do that again, whenever we have the chance. We are looking forward to a good tournament.

"Also winning the European Championships this year was a great boost to my confidence coming into this tournament. We will miss Carsten (Mogensen), but we were also without him in 2016. It would have been great to have him play with Mathias (Boe), but it's okay, as we still have good doubles players in the squad."

Denmark have been drawn in Group D with Malaysia, Russia and Algeria. The Danes open their campaign on Monday against Algeria.
