Roslin chides players for lack of spirit

KUALA LUMPUR: Ex-international shuttler Roslin Hashim has slammed the Thomas Cup squad for lacking team spirit in Bangkok.

The former World No 1 also touched on the poor state in Malaysia’s singles department.

Roslin said the team still depended heavily on 36-year-old Lee Chong Wei while Lee Zii Jia and Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin were basically using the outing to gain exposure for the next edition.

"Overall, team spirit was lacking and this affected the players’ performances," said Roslin.

Although, Roslin praised Zii Jia for doing respectably, he feels the player is still inconsistent.

“Zii Jia did brilliantly to beat Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus in the group tie against Denmark. His performance surprised everyone as Vititnghus is a strong player.

“The win should have given him the motivation and confidence for his next match against Jonatan Christie of Indonesia in the quarter-finals. However, his game was not the same.

"His physical condition deteriorated in the third game, which led me to ask myself whether he was unfit."

Roslin added that Iskandar failed to perform in some matches.

"Both players (Iskandar and Zii Jia) lacked team spirit, you could see it, even on television. They lacked fighting spirit and depended only on their game plan. It would have been different if they had a little extra spirit."
